Internship - Fish and Invertebrate

The position requires a dedicated individual who will take direction from the Area Supervisors on the fish and invertebrate team in assisting with the husbandry routine and maintenance of exhibits and/or holding tanks. All duties will be assigned, mentored, tracked, reviewed and discussed between the intern and the area Supervisor. Interns gain knowledge in the care of fish and invertebrates in a closed environment and also learn about different types of water filtration.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist biologists with their daily routines
2. Prepares daily diets for all fish and invertebrates and learn to feed the animals in certain areas.
3. Performs daily maintenance on exhibit and holding systems i.e. scrubbing algae, vacuuming, cleaning glass, and maintenance of filtration.
4. Occasionally assist biologists in the collection of live specimens.
5. Assist biologists in different quarantine protocols.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Intern applicant should be pursuing a degree in marine biology or related biological field and have a strong interest in the care of fish and invertebrates in a closed environment.
2. Intern applicant must be registered to receive college credit for internship.
3. Interns must complete a minimum of 120 hours and are strongly recommended to complete more than the minimum requirement.
4. Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and/or weekends and holidays.


PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. In good health and capable of performing strenuous an/or heavy physical labor.
2. No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
3. Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
4. Ability to work in all weather conditions.
5. No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work.
6. Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
7. Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections and parasitic disease).

Note:  Position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous an unpredictable animal species, and potential dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns.
