Internship - Birds and Mammals

The position requires a dedicated individual who will take direction from the intern supervisor, Curator of Birds and Mammals, and the Husbandry Director. All duties will be assigned, mentored, tracked, reviewed and discussed between the intern and the area Supervisor. This includes all aspects of animal husbandry, exhibit maintenance and holding area maintenance.  The position will participate in and assist with the seal care program, which will consist of food preparation, exhibit cleaning, collecting animal behavior data, and observing training sessions. 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist in providing for the needs of all animals in the mammal or avian exhibits by preparing diets, exhibit cleaning and holding building maintenance.
2. Keeps work area clean and organized.
3. Observe the training and care of the mammal collection
4. At the direction of supervisors, interact with and respond to public requests for information
5. Complete an assigned project which may include but is not limited to data entry, ethograms, enrichment device development, or behavior observation.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:


1. Currently enrolled in a biology or related field program receiving college credit.
2. Previous animal experience. Emphasis should be on animal health and welfare.
3. Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:


1. In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
2. No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
3. Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
4. Ability to work in all weather conditions.
5. No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work.
6. Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
7. Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections and parasitic disease).

Note: Position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species, and potential dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs.  Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required. (e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns)
