Veterinarian Technician/Biologist

SUMMARY:
The position requires a dedicated individual who will take direction from the Curator of Birds and Mammals, Veterinarian, and/or Husbandry Director in carrying out laboratory and treatment support. This includes routine veterinary technician responsibilities such as blood draws and analysis, microbiological analysis, specimen collection, medical record keeping and updating etc., as well as assisting the staff with treatments and other diagnostic techniques such as necropsies, radiology and surgery. This position also participates in the coverage of assigned bird and mammal areas, which includes all aspects of animal husbandry and water quality analysis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • As a member of the Husbandry team, you will lead by example by being patient, kind, humble, respectful, selfless, forgiving, honest and committed when interacting with one another and guests.
  • Performs routine animal health diagnostic procedures such as microbiological analysis, blood analysis, parasite analysis and water quality analysis.
  • Participates and assist the Animal Health staff in the administration of treatments.
  • Assists the staff in radiological and surgical techniques.
  • Researches treatments and regimes under the direction of the Veterinarian.
  • Maintains the medical records database.
  • Keeps work area clean and organized and reports equipment failures to supervisors in a timely way.
  • Participates in all responsibilities of the Animal Health Services group.
  • Assists in collecting and other Husbandry department activities when needed.
  • Interacts with and respond to public/media requests for information. Participate in Aquarium related education, public relations and passport programs including facility tours and lectures.
  • Cross-trains with other husbandry staff.
  • Comply with safety and security directives, policies and procedures.
  • This position has been identified as Safety Critical with authorized operator requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification and training as a Veterinary Technician/Animal Health Technician with ability to become licensed in the state of New Jersey is recommended.
  • Three years of Veterinary Technician/A.H.T. experience. Experience in a zoo or an aquarium is desirable.
  • Experience with medical record software such as MEDARKS is recommended.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which will include weekends and/or evenings and holidays.
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical examination and drug screening.
  • In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
  • No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections and parasitic disease).

Note: Position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous an unpredictable animal species, and potential dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns.
