Camden, NJ - The cast and crew from TLC's hit TV show, Cake Boss, recently visited Adventure Aquarium on the Camden Waterfront in New Jersey to deliver an oceanic -inspired cake that was commissioned by Adventure Aquarium in celebration of its 5th Anniversary. The cake was revealed to a select audience of Adventure Aquarium Annual Passport holders in CURRENTS…the Ballroom at Adventure Aquarium, as a small token of appreciation for continuing to choose Adventure Aquarium as the place they come to create great family memories worth repeating.
"We believe that creating lasting memories is one of the greatest gifts you can give a child," said Melissa Kanaly, Adventure Aquarium's Director of Marketing, who was instrumental in commissioning the Cake Boss for Adventure Aquarium's 5th Anniversary Celebration. "Each time a child gazes into the eyes of a nearly 3 ton hippo, or watches a Great Hammerhead shark glide through the water, or has the chance to reach out and actually touch a shark…each of these experiences is a gift, and Adventure Aquarium's Annual Pass holders give that gift of wonder to their families all year long. In gratitude, we thought it was fitting to honor Adventure Aquarium's Passport holders by commissioning a cake that represented the animals and nature they love so much."
The Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro, along with his first cousin and fellow Carlos Bakery staff member, Frank Amato, a.k.a. "Lil Frank," also traded in fondant for flippers and suited up to take part in Adventure Aquarium's wildly popular Swim with the Sharks Adventure Program, an up-close animal encounter that allows guests to snorkel in Adventure Aquarium's 550,000 Shark Realm Exhibit to come face-to-face with over 26 sharks. The two bakers "took the plunge" to help draw inspiration for the aquatically inspired 5th Anniversary cake, which included detailed (and edible!) replicas of sea-dwelling animals like sea turtles, sting rays, clownfish - even a hammerhead shark - as well as the Aquarium's anniversary tagline, "Celebrating 5 Years of Adventure!" The cake creation also featured two 55-gallon live aquariums built into the design of the cake, which were set up and maintained by the Aquarium's marine biologists Nikki Grandinetti, Curator of Fish & Invertebrates.
"The cake was amazing," said Grandinetti, who worked closely with Valastro to determine which saltwater fish would best compliment the cake creation, and filled the massive tanks and transferred the saltwater fish before the final cake reveal. "I was very impressed with the amount of detail Buddy's team put into creating each of the species. It really was awesome!"
